Rupnik's iconographic style renders his work outright blasphemous. Icons are not said to be painted, but written; their creation is a spiritual exercise with prayer being an integral part of the process. Rupnik took that holy style and re-founded it on violence against consecrated women. Every work is infused with the sin that inspired it. He is an unrepentant apostate who serially manipulated the vulnerable sisters in his care, causing them to commit grave sins and endanger their souls. Yes, removing his art will be costly, but anything less is completely unacceptable. He's not Wagner or Bernini, he's something twisted and demonic.
Thank you Fr. Bonaventure and Fr. Patrick. I like the art too. But the man is odious.
I think it comes down to the Church showing respect to the victims and that the burden of their suffering is something they can lean on the Church to help support them in. The matter of scandal which many will be and especially at Holy Mass, it would be disturbing as it is rather widely known. And the matter of necessity, I do not think it would be hard to find artists willing to create replacement works and I think if there is greater ease of making the change it adds more onus to attempt to make the change for the moral consideration of the other two matters. I personally liked the way the art looked, but I gladly would sacrifice it, if it can bring relief to those suffering here. I know there are likely some who have gotten spiritual benefit from the art in the past, but the potential for scandal seems to negate that on its own and then we still have the primary matter in favor of its removal from public spiritual spaces if possible. If not for justice, then certainly for mercy.
Corollary: The proximity, that horrible relation the art has to the matter as well! Knowing that now, I doubt I could like that style anymore.
Does anyone know if the Knights of Columbus re-released their Building up the Domestic Church seried without that art? It seems particularly wrong to have it on such works now. If not scissors are a thing.
Thank you so much for your reliable clarity, broadness of scope in considering tough questions, and example of how to hold to our beliefs without brittleness or fear. Thank you for always sharing the nutritious fruits of your contemplations. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow. You Guys and your offerings are Such Blessings to Christendom!
Isn't it a matter of Justice? This art is disturbing: the characters have dead eyes, like a doll's eyes. But the artist did evil, sacrilegious things to consecrated women. They sack courageous bishops such as Joseph Strickland yet this person's excommunication was lifted within hours of it be levied. Injustice.
I was at Fatima last Easter. I didn’t research any of the artwork on display in advance. I was sitting in the Holy Trinity church and was immediately disturbed by the rather large mosaic in combination with an oppressive looking crucifix( Irish artist) A day later it struck me, as I had heard of him, this must be a Rupnik mosaic. Looked it up and was disturbed so much more. I had to attend Mass there, no other option, and just cast my eyes down at the level of the priests. Besides the disturbing aspect it doesn’t really represent the Fatima apparition. I had the privilege of being in Knock, Ireland the previous Easter and that Mosaic was beautiful and more representative of Knock. Sadly I will not return to Fatima because of that Mosaic. I also felt saddened for the Portugal people as they don’t deserve this desecration of their Shrine.
Kunstoventure! 😄
Safe travels, Fr. Bonaventure! We met in 2022 during the New York retreat about virtues. I was just about to enter my second year of med school then, and you took a moment at the end of the retreat to encourage me. I wanted to thank you - that really made a difference for me. I am presently studying to take my second board exam and apply to residency programs in neurology. If you would, please pray for my studies and discernment during your pilgrimage. God bless!
Be assured of our prayers, Caleb!
The Rupnik conversation going into all the what ifs relative to cancel culture was unnecessary and, frankly, painful. His behavior is antithetical to the Good News his art purports to illustrate. Thank you, Fr. Patrick, for stating the only answer congruent with who we, the Body of Christ, say we are.
Thank you Frs.
Wow, Fr. Jacob looks like Victor if he did become a priest...
I’m very against cancel culture…. But this is one of those situations wheee he needs to be dealt with. His art needs to be removed if for nothing else respect of the victims. You are in my prayers!
i would argue that due to the nature of rupniks crimes being against the church is a unique way, and his art being for the church gives greater cause than say tossing out a nazi philosopher
Ask the women he abused what should be done with his art. Continuing to display it seems like a slap in their faces.
Raping up to 40 nuns is never ok. Raping 1 nun is not ok. There should be NO support of him or his sexually derived artwork! I feel there should have been a clearer and stronger message from you Fathers. Waffling doesn't help anyone!
Sadly, the fact that low quality art from a checkered artist lasted this long is a reflection of the sins of the laity and priests rather than Fr. Rupnik.
Bra ads are probably not appropriate here 🫣
Thank you Father Patrick and Father Kunstoventure 😂😂😂
So great to hear about your summer projects, Fathers. Praying for successful events and fruitful study and prayer!
Something that struck me during Fr. Bonaventure’s description of the bleeding woman touching the hem of Jesus’ robes: why would she be turning from Jesus, when she just spent so much energy fighting the crowds and literally crawling to get to Him? As a former dancer, I appreciate the imagery, truly. But it just doesn’t seem to fit the story.
I have no problem with antisemitism, but there are French philosophers (e.g., Foucault, Sarte, Derida, etc) who if you look into what they did, should definitely not be studied.
Alright. Basta! I haven’t heard either of you explain that, besides serial rapes tied to Rupnik’s art, but he also used the confessional to advance his lust for victims who had a conscience. How low can you go? The figleaf of “like the aesthetics of his art” only covers so much blasphemy. Never mind the trauma of the victims. Geez.
Fr. Bonaventure, love that you're going to Slovakia! Please pray for my Slovak family especially those that have fallen away from the faith.
Sometimes i wonder if God thought He Himself would be fulfilling enough for Adam. No other creature asks to be partnered better... but Adam felt a type of aloneness that warranted a ...Big Operation.
Consider the background of cover-ups of abuse: an offending priest or religious quietly moved to a new place and even promoted. We've been hearing about these stories, again and again and again, for more than twenty years. Continuing to use Rupnik's art seems like the same old pattern: an unrepentant abuser being protected, the leadership of the church acting in a way that suggests they think abuse is no big deal. Art that's in place can be covered with plaster or even with curtains, perhaps with paintings hung in their place. Sure, it may be unsightly, but it's not as offensive as pretending that art with this origin is fit for sacred use.
Fr Kunstoventure I would be happy to give you a few Polish lessons. Just drop into Switzerland 🙏✨️🙏✨️🙏
Aquinas on Beauty: Integritas, Claritas, Consonantia ... those murals or whatever you call them are certainly not objectively beautiful.
Take it down and do not use it. He is a serial abuser and it is a scandal
Pope Francis says that an evil means cannot be used for a good end. In the name of Jesus, banish Rupnik’s art from liturgical spaces, or display them in a House of Shame for Artistic Reprobates. If sin was purposefully committed in their creation, then they are icons of sacrilege and evil.
I think continued use and new use of the art in media stuff can be a source of scandal for many. As such, this could be a distraction in places and at times where the church is working to grow holiness and virtue. Out of sight, out of mind?
I always thought immaculate conception and virgin birth were used interchangeably! I was today years old when I realized one is referring to marry and one is referring to jesus
It was such a treat to listen to this episode, especially as I am currently reading A Gentleman in Moscow!
Evolution presupposes death, therefore it is false as the original structure of Creation. Salve Maria!
Excellent explanation.
For you have ONE Father , and HE is in heaven .
Thank you, Fathers!
Thank you very much . This is very helpful.
If someone on the street is asking you for money and has a 90% chance of using it for drugs, wouldn't it be the more charitable thing to do to spend that same money on a Church organization dedicated to helping these people, or a gift card so they can't use it for drugs?
I am a Protestant convert that had the true blessing of having Fr. Riffle as my pastor during my formation, conversion, and confirmation. He truly is the most beautiful example of someone who is devoted to the priesthood as a servant of Jesus Christ and His church. He was so busy, but always found the time to lead those under his pastoral care. I’m so blessed to have had him as my first pastor into the Catholic faith. Please pray for him to continue his selfless acts of charity to everyone he encounters!

@ 19:35, spot on.
AGIM was one of the most transforming books I've ever read. It captured the feeling of arrest common to anyone trying to live the moral life today and made me feel understood in a way no other book ever has
Wow that’s quite the recommendation. I’ll definitely be adding it to my tbr!
My parents had an extensive home library. I was a precocious reader and read "The Dumb Ox" by Chesterton when I was about 10 and fell in love with St. Thomas. Not too long after, I found a copy of Marcus Aurelias and started reading him. I went to Catholic school and had a somewhat Stoical upbringing anyway. Definitely not an indulgent one, despite having well off parents. Somehow those two volumes formed syntheses in my young mind and this continues to this day as I approach my 78th birthday. Edit: As I finished listening, I seem to be a Thomistic Stoic.
I've got to read this book. Great recommendation. I wonder if any of the friars write fiction, at all?
I love all the episodes of Fr. Gregory Pines. It helps me spiritually & I share them with my 4 sisters & friend. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.
Shameless ads for conferences!
Is there a longer version of this conversation somewhere ?
We love you Fr.
